Which midfielder is the best finisher in the Premier League?

The Premier League has a number of fine finishers but which midfielders are the most clinical so far this season? Including Arsenal, Stoke, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham.

The likes of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Olivier Giroud, Romelu Lukaku and Christian Benteke are so often in the spotlight picking up the plaudits for their strikes but there are a number of midfielders whose goals could steal the limelight this term.

1) Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)

The Gunners are currently top of the table, four points clear, and it’s in no small part down the performance of the Welshman this term. After struggling for the last couple of seasons at the Emirates, Ramsey has emerged as one of the most ‘complete’ midfielders in England this season.

He has scored 6 goals in the Premier Legaue alone (11 in total), making 4 assists, averaging a 2.2 shots per game (26 in total), operating an 85.8% pass completion rate and picking up three Man of the Match awards. Currently, he has scored more goals per minute than any other midfield player – every 169 minutes he has found the back of the net.

2) Charlie Adam (Stoke City)

Stoke’s midfield maestro Charlie Adam had been one of the best players at Blackpool, prior to his unimpressive spell at Liverpool but, so far this term, the 27-year-old Scot has scored 3 goals and in seven league appearances for Stoke. He averages 1.8 shots per game (18 in total), and his pass completion rate overall is 75.9%. He averages a goal every 179 minutes at present.

3) Oscar 5G/184M

If Adam’s inclusion was a surprise, Oscar’s certainly won’t be – the 22-year-old Brazilian has been one of Chelsea’s best performers so far this term. He;s scored 5 goals in 10 games (two as a substitute) and averages 2.2 shots per game (26 in total), and operates an 82.6% pass completion rate as well as picking up two Man of the Match awads for the Blues. He scores a goal every 184 minutes at the moment.

4) David Silva (Manchester City)

Another playmaker whose inclusion won’t be a surprise is Manchester City’s main maestro – the 27-year-old Spaniard has scored 3 league goals and made 3 assists in 7 appearances for City, averaging 2 shots per game (14 in total), operating a pass completion rate of 88.3% and winning one Man of the Match award. He scores a goal every 192 minutes.

5) Gylfi Sigurdsson (Tottenham)

Finally, another surprise perhaps in the form of Tottenham’s 24-year-old Iceland international. There had been concerns for his status in the Spurs team with a number of new arrivals in his position but he’s challenged very well, scoring 3 goals in 7 starts and three sub appearances, averaging 2.2 shots per game (22 in total), operating an 85.8% pass completion rate and winning one Man of the Match award. He has scored a goal once every 201 minutes for Spurs.

Overall, for shots per minutes, obviously Ramsey leads the league in terms of goals from midfield and, for the most clinical, looking at the number of shots taken compared to the number of goals scored, Ramsey’s shots have ended up in the back of the net 23% of the time, Oscar and Sigurdsson both on 21.4%, David Silva is on 19.2% and Adam falls behind with only 16% of his shots ending up in the goal. With his right foot an astonishing 82% of Aaron Ramsey's shots have been on target and 47% of his total shots on target have led to a goal with 53% of the having been saved by the goalkeeper.
