Arsenal cruised to 12 points in their Champions League group with four points out of five, three points clear, and would normally by this point have wrapped up.
Not on this occasion, thanks to a well-earned and nervy win from group rivals Borussia Dortmund.
The Germans shrugged off their defensive injury crisis to beat Italian side Napoli 3-1, also elevating themselves to nine points.
It sets up a tricky last fixture for Arsenal away to Napoli in their final match, because if the Italians beat the Gunners, and Dortmund defeat whipping boys Marseille in France, all three clubs will finish on 12 points.
And at that point it gets complicated. The goal difference between the three teams would come into account, disregarding all matches against Marseille.
Then it would come down to goals scored between the three. The next tie-break is the away goals rule.
The nuances of the situation is complex, but the upshot is if Arsenal lose by less than three goals, they qualify. A 3-0 defeat will knock Arsenal out.
Napoli by contrast will know they absolutely have to beat the Gunners by three goals to progress. If Dortmund beat Marseille, they will be through regardless.
Not quite home and dry, but Arsenal fans will have to fancy their chances, given their only defeats this season have been 3-1, 2-1, and 1-0.
Time to hope that decision not to sign Gonzalo Higuain doesn't come back to haunt them.
