Manchester United target Thiago hailed as 'Bayern's matchwinner'

Thiago Alcantara

Manchester United were strongly linked with Thiago Alcantara during the summer transfer window.

It's been a while since we wrote about Thiago Alcantara, and the reason is simple; injury has meant there has been nothing to report.

That has now changed after the Spanish midfielder came off the bench at the weekend for Bayern Munich, for his first appearance for the club since August 24.

Thiago was linked with signing with Manchester United from Barcelona during the summer, in which he helped Spain's under-21 side win the European Championship.

So after an injury-interrupted start to his life at Bayern, he came back to action with a bang in the Bundesliga duel away to Borussia Dortmund.

With the game locked at 0-0, manager Pep Guardiola brought Thiago off the bench in the 64th minute.

Two minutes later Bayern were in front, and they went onto win the game 3-0, via goals from Mario Gotze, Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller.

Thiago provided the assist for Robben's goal, showing just how devastating he can be, passing accurately on a fast counter-attack.

German legend Gunter Netzer has hailed the central midfielder as Bayern's matchwinner, writing in his column for German daily Bild, with the headline hailing him as a 'matchwinner':

"The turning point was the substitution for Thiago in the second half... Thiago embodies what is so important for the game of Guardiola. He is varied, was always elusive and has good ball security. He can be fast, and make decisive passes like playing the pass to make it 2-0 for Arjen Robben. He can vary the pace. Thiago has inspired me, even though he was injured for so long.

"This explains why Pep Guardiola wanted to sign his compatriot from Barcelona necessarily. Because his presence guarantees that Guardiola's football philosophy is implemented to the letter."

Thiago is only going to get better at Bayern, and under the tutelage of mentor Pep Guardiola he could go onto become one of the world's best midfielders.

As Manchester United struggle with Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini, with Michael Carrick out injured - the sight of Thiago Alcantara hitting top form will just compound their summer near-miss.
