Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir, 43, took over the presidential reigns of Internazionale just two months ago but is fully confident he has the right manager in charge of the Giuseppe Meazza side in Walter Mazzarri, because he is similar in character to the club's 2010 Treble-winning boss; Jose Mourinho, a comparison welcomed by Mazzarri himself.
Last week, Thohir told Gazetta dello Sport: 'Mourinho won the Treble in 2010. He’s one of the best, but I see Mazzarri has a similar personality. I hope he can start laying the foundations to build a strong side over the next two to three years.'
An accomplished manager in Italian football, Mazzarri returned a near 50% winning record with Napoli during his four-year tenure between 2009 and 2013 and was responsible in the recruitment of Edinson Cavani.
At Inter, he has already won eight from his first 13 games (61.5%) and so, while the season is too young for an accurate direct comparison, on current form he has a near identical winning percentage as Mourinho did during his incumbency (63%).
Happy to embrace the Jose analogy, Mazzarri is quoted to have said: 'History says Mourinho is a great. I am not disappointed if someone compares me to his character, but everyone is different.
'I have 10 years of Serie A to speak for me. If people want to compare me to a great Coach, then I can only be happy with that. One of the aspects that pleased me the most was that Thohir pointed out the team comes first. Individuals only excel when they are working within a unit to make the team better.'
Inter are currently fourth in the Serie A, trailing Juventus by eight points in the race for the Scudetto.
