Manchester United cannot even find a way to get Shinji Kagawa involved in the first team in his preferred position on a regular basis, but alas they are linked with another playmaker.
The player concerned is 24-year-old Everton Ribeiro of Cruzeiro, but there remains a bit of mystery regarding his status.
They write: "A representative of Manchester United (ENG) was in Brazil in recent days and observed closely the half of 24 years.
"Before offering an official proposal to Cruzeiro, the English club tries to make possible guarantees for the player to get a work permit to work in England. What can facilitate obtaining a visa is that in 2009, even as left-back, Everton participated in the U-20 National Team squad that won the South American Championship category."
Ribeiro has scored five goals and provided eight assists in action for his club this season, and the website report that a bid of €10 million was recently accepted from Qatar based club Al Jaish in July, but the player did not want to move to the Middle East and he stayed in Brazil.
However there is a little mystery over his status. The usually reliable website transfermarkt claims the player is contracted to sign for ambitious Chinese club Guangzhao Evergrande on January 1.
Chinese based football journalist Stephane Schlichting reported on Twitter just last week that Ribeiro was likely to be signed as a replacement for Dario Conca, one of the world's best paid players, who will sign as a free agent with Brazilian club Fluminese in January.
Any move for Ribeiro may not be quite done yet, you would think United would not be wasting their time otherwise, with Lancenet publishing their report just 24 hours ago.
Yet this could be one potential move which is over before it has even begun.
