£40m Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea target scores his first goal of the season

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic bagged the winning goal for Benfica against Braga this evening.

When Chelsea allowed Nemanja Matic to leave in 2011 as part of the David Luiz deal we are pretty sure that they never expected to be quoted £40 million to buy him back just two years later.

But that is the situation they find themselves in. The Serbian international midfielder, nicknamed ‘The Spider’, has come on leaps and bounds since then and become one of Europe’s most hotly pursued talents.

Chelsea are not alone in looking at the 25-year-old as Manchester United and Liverpool are also being mentioned as interesting parties - as are Italian side Napoli. Now while nobody is willing to spend the astronomical release clause the Lisbon side somehow got written into his current deal - upwards of £20 million does not seem to be beyond the realms of possibility.

But while he does do a great job of breaking up the play from the deep midfield position and being the catalyst for many a Benfica goal there is one area in which he could do with improving to justify such a fee.

Score some goals.

Well that is exactly what he has done this weekend.

Benfica took on Braga today at the Stadium of Light - and won 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 72nd minute from Matic.

He surged forward from midfield before hammering home a left-foot half-volley beyond Eduardo to give Benfica the win - and take them up to second in the table, catching on Porto who could only manage a draw at home to Nacional.

Here is the goal…
