Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc is not having a very good few weeks. Having been beaten by fellow stopper Asmir Begovic after just 13 seconds, and from 97.5 yards, in the Saints’ 1-1 draw with Stoke City earlier this month, he dropped an almighty clanger against Arsenal earlier today.
Having received a back-pass, and with Gunners striker Olivier Giroud bearing down on him, the Polish international decided to bamboozle the Frenchman with his skill.
And it worked…to begin with…but after one trick too many Boruc was robbed of the ball and Giroud scored probably the easiest goal of his career.
One Arsenal fan who took great pleasure in Boruc’s mistake was Pier Morgan, who posted a selection of tweets including one comparing the Saints’ stopper with comedy character Borat, and another asking if Boruc suddenly thought he was Lionel Messi.
He did end his collection of thoughts with one praising the losing team, calling them “the best Southampton side I’ve ever watched us play”.
Perhaps they will take heart from that. Or more likely, they will be wondering what might have been had Boruc just hoofed the ball up field.
