Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Joe Allen starting the derby

Reds fans have reacted following the news that Allen will start the Merseyside derby.

Following the release of the team-sheets for this afternoon’s match between Everton and Liverpool, it was the choices of Reds manager Brendan Rodgers that raised the most eyebrows.

Not only were Daniel Sturridge and Mamadou Sakho on the bench, but there was a first start since August for Joe Allen.

A shoulder operation back in March, followed by a hamstring injury at the start of this season, has robbed the former Swansea man of plenty of game-time, but he was chosen to start arguably the fiercest derby in English football (although plenty of fans may disagree with that particular statement).

Up until today, the 23-year-old had played just 35 minutes of league football all season. So it is quite an ask for him to compete against a midfield of Ross Barkley, Steven Pienaar, Garth Barry and James McCarthy who will be fiercely contesting every ball.

Then again, maybe Rodgers knows exactly what he is doing...only time will tell.

Following the announcement of the team-sheets, we took to Twitter to see what the Liverpool and Everton fans thought of the inclusion of Allen.

The results were interesting, not too complimentary to the player, and some of them can be found below:
