Tottenham: 4-4-2 and Adebayor?

Could Emmanuel Adebayor play a part against former side Manchester City this weekend?

In Andre Villas-Boas’ latest press conference in the build-up to the Super Sunday tie at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur he revealed that Tottenham have been working on a new formation in training; 4-4-2.

This is news that must fill Tottenham fans with positivity as the favoured 4-2-3-1 formation has only provided nine goals in Tottenham’s 11 Premier League games so far this season - with two coming from the penalty spot.

Andre Villas-Boas also mentioned that this could give a chance to the forgotten man Emmanuel Adebayor to form a link up with either Roberto Soldado or Jermain Defoe who are both restricted in height but have an eagle eye for the back of the net if a chance comes their way.

Tottenham have looked very easy to defend against by using their 4-2-3-1 formation because it doesn’t give the opposition much to think about as once the creative midfielder is taken out of the game, there is very limited creativity in the team, especially with AVB opting for inverted wingers so far this season.

Emmanuel Adebayor will undoubtedly give the defenders something extra to think about when they come up against Tottenham.

While the majority of the squad were away with their international sides, Adebayor and Soldado were tested out in a friendly together in a 4-4-2 system, AVB revealed today; “We’ve trained with 4-4-2 during this international break. We played a game against a local team over here last Friday playing 4-4-2”.

This could have been a hint that he is weighing up his options for the crucial game on Sunday away to Manchester City as he went on further to explain he hasn’t decided whether he will play one or two up front. Could he even play Adebayor up front on his own even though he hasn’t played a single minute in the Tottenham shirt so far this season?

The Portuguese head coach speculated: “Our likely approach is to go with one up front (against Manchester City). It’s a decision that I will have to take, which one I will choose (Out of the 3 available strikers). They are very near each other at the moment and it could be a possibility that even Ade could play that game.”
