The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Chelsea's season so far

Chelsea were expected to run away with the league under Jose Mourinho, but sit in fourth place - what has gone right and wrong at Stamford Bridge?

Olly Dawes on what you need to know about Chelsea's season so far.

The Good

The return of Jose Mourinho had Chelsea positioned as the favourites to reclaim the Premier League title, and the Blues sit just four points off leaders Arsenal. New signings Andre Schurrle and Willian have really started to impress, having been bought for a combined £50m. With Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar also vying for places in the team, Mourinho has an embarrassment of attacking riches.

The Bad

Supposed spats with midfielders Mata and Kevin de Bruyne placed a slight cloud over Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, but any arguments have seemingly fizzled out now, with Mata restored to the first team. The loan exit of Romelu Lukaku doesn't look great with the Belgian scoring goals for Everton and Chelsea's striking trio of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba struggling for goals, but it will aid Lukaku's development to be playing consistently.

The Ugly

A couple of odd results have really hurt Chelsea this season. From losing 2-1 at home to FC Basel to a limp 2-0 loss at Newcastle, the Blues have come out flat far too often this season and will need to sharper in the coming months. There hasn't been anything too alarming, but a couple of shock results have made people question Chelsea's title credentials – and yet still they are only five points off top spot.

C+ – nothing too terrible to push the grade down, but nothing great to push it up either. They need to fine tune some aspects of their play, but with the quality they have, expect them to go on a run of good results soon.
