They may play in different positions but both have made an impact at their respective clubs this season so, out of Wales' two marquee players - Gareth Bale, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and currently of Real Madrid; and Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey - who has been most effective this season?
The Spanish press are notoriously unforgiving over adaptation periods required for big-money signings when joining Los Blancos, particularly when that big-money involves a world record, as has been the case with Bale, whose performances have been described by El Pais as 'confused' while ABC termed his debut as anonymous.
Even manager Carlo Ancelotti appeared frustrated by Bale's contributions and overall performance in El Clasico last month, claiming that the well-balanced attacker still needed to learn the movements required of a Real Madrid athlete when on the pitch and off the ball.
The official website of Real Madrid list Bale's position as a midfielder but, in truth, he is a position-switching forward and, despite his criticisms thus far, he has a few reasons to feel confident he can continue to improve in Spain… namely, his goal-scoring is not far behind that of his countryman Ramsey, who is lighting up the Premier League and is the stand-out midfielder in England.
Comparing their numbers directly seems unfair when Ramsey has competed in almost double the minutes Bale has in their respective leagues but, still, the Gunner is able to influence a game with greater frequency, from a far deeper position than the former Spur, as detailed below.
