As we head into the final month of 2013, a number of players will be pondering their futures ahead of the January transfer window with their contracts imminently expiring next summer.
1) Robert Lewandowski
The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker was the subject of the saga of the summer – highly anticipated to head straight for Dortmund’s Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich the Pole could yet surprise us all in January or the summer and make a move to the Premier League or La Liga.
2) Nemanja Vidic
At present the Manchester United captain has yet to agree a new deal with the English champions and according to reports he has some admirers over in Italy with the Serie A champions Juventus. At 32, he’s no spring chicken but his experience could be exactly what the Old Lady are looking to import.
3) Samuel Eto’o
The 32-year-old Cameroon striker has only just arrived at Stamford Bridge for a reunion with his former boss at Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho, but as they say, ‘easy come easy go’, he could be headed straight for the exit next summer if not sooner.
4) Bacary Sagna
Across the other side of London, one of Arsenal’s longest serving players is 30-year-old France right-back Bacary Sagna. He’s been posturing over the terms of a new deal for well over a year now and with no signature in sight it might turn out to be an end in sight instead for the Gunners.
5) Patrice Evra
Another French fullback with a big decision to make is United’s vice-captain Evra who has been heavily linked with a move back to his native land in the New Year.
6) John Terry
It’s definitely something about the captain’s armband that’s taking effect on contracts at present. Former England captain and Chelsea skipper is considered a legend at Stamford Bridge but he has been linked with a potential move to France and the USA.
7) Ashley Cole
Meanwhile, Terry’s England and Chelsea teammate and good friend Ashley Cole is also heading towards the end of his deal this summer.
8) Joleon Lescott
31-year-old Lescott has fallen down the pecking order somewhat at the Etihad and with the World Cup on it’s way next summer, he could very well opt to move in January as his City colleague Gareth Barry did this summer on loan to Everton. Either way, he’ll likely be on the move next year.
9) Xabi Alonso
Over in La Liga, two of Spain’s most influential players are nearing the end of their contracts and are both subsequently the subject of speculation over their futures. This former Liverpool midfielder is longed for back at Anfield but recent reports have him reuniting with Mourinho at Chelsea in January.
10) Victor Valdes
Finally, Barcelona stopper Valdes caused chaos last season when he announced his desire to move on from Catalonia. He has since changed his mind according to reports but could perhaps be ousted from his place between the sticks by former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina currently on loan at Napoli with Rafael Benitez.
