Just a short message with such devastating news... for Borussia Dortmund.
The official twitter account by Arsenal’s Champions League opponent just announced that world-class defender and German international Mats Hummel will be sidelined till January with a foot injury he suffered in last night’s friendly between Germany and England at Wembley stadium.
German broadcaster ARD showed Hummels yesterday sliding awkward to the ground and apparently tangling his heel.
Mats Hummels came in after the first half and had to leave after 20 minutes of play. The defender signalled German national manager Jogi Low his wish to substitute but recorded the three or four more tackles after that anyway.
This is a tough loss for Borussia Dortmund hosting SCC Napoli in their Champions League second match next week. Arsenal will be benefited if Dortmund drop points and almost be assured of qualification.
Odds are in favour for Arsene Wenger’s team. Dortmund is already trailing with three points behind. Another defeat would quite likely mean an elimination.
The injury prone team from West of Germany not only have to overcome the absence of Hummels, the best tackling player in Bundesliga – Hummels won 81 of 116 duels – but Neven Subotic and Marcel Schmelzer as well.
Three starting defenders being out is going to be tough to overcome even for last year's Champions League runners-up.
