Matchday 12: Five interesting Premier League stats

Manchester City, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Hull City, Manchester United, Cardiff City, Everton and Liverpool all feature.

The Premier League is closing in on completing the first third of the 2013/2014 season.

Stephen Pickering takes a look at some of the interesting points of the fixtures due to be played this weekend:

  • MY BALL – Manchester City and Tottenham are top of the league in the amount of possession retained in the Premier League this season. The game on Saturday could prove to be a cagey affair, as Manchester City average 60% of the possession in games, and Tottenahm 59.3%.
  • SHOOOOOOOT! – Another link between the two sides besides the possession, is that both Manchester City and Tottenham have struck the most shots in the premier league this season. Tottenham average 18.7 shots per game whilst Manchester City average 17.4 shots per game. Whoever gets hold of the game will be the side more likely to reciprocate their seasonal form and the opposition will likely have to adapt away from their normal game.
  • SET PIECE – Crystal Palace and Hull have scored the lowest amount of goals from open play in the premier league this season. Crystal Palace have only managed TWO goals from open play, and Hull a measly FOUR - a very important game for both sides, the defending from set-pieces will be emphasised by both managers
  • LONG TIME NO SEE – Manchester United play Cardiff in the league for the first time since their second division match in 1975, where Manchester United won 4-0. The last time a Cardiff city side beat Manchester United was in 1960, when they ran out 3-0 winners in Wales.
  • 200 – Everton and Liverpool go at each other for the 200th time in their history on Saturday. Liverpool have the better record out of the 2 sides, winning 76 of their previous 199 meetings. Everton have won 60 of their previous 199 meetings leaving 63 of their matches ending without a winner.
