Algeria have eliminated Burkina Faso from the African qualifying playoffs - shattering the hopes of Bertrand Traore.
At the start of the year I made a ridiculous bet - on Burkina Faso to win the African Cup if Nations. Then to mine and everyone’s surprise they made it to the final - being defeated by Nigeria.
So it is no surprise to see that they were involved in the final qualifying fixtures from Africa this week.
They defeated Algeria last month 3-2 and travelled to a hostile atmosphere in North Africa with the hope of making it to their first ever World Cup finals.
For one Chelsea player it meant a lot. 18-year-old attacking midfielder Bertrand Traore finally signed a permanent contract at Stamford Bridge after being on trial at the club for almost two years.
He could not get a Work Permit previously - but after he starred in the pre-season friendly tour they managed to convince the Home Office he was worthy.
But unfortunately the teenager will not be going to the World Cup - after Rangers defender Majid Bougherra ended the hopes of The Stallions.
He scored for the Desert Foxes to send Algeria to their second World Cup in a row.
Traore came on early in the second half - as Paul Put’s side chased their Brazilian dream. Traore though, who was dubbed ‘a special player’ earlier in the day by his national team coach, could not reverse the trend as Algeria held out to go through on away goals.
Here is the goal from the game…
