Chelsea latest: Strike target worth £450k a WEEK? January exits & more

Falcao Porto

All the latest news and views from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's continued search for a consistently-threatening striker with star power has seen their name perpetually linked with AS Monaco hitman Radamel Falcao, who is allegedly discontented at Fontvieille.

Worth over €100m in cumulative transfer fees, Falcao - who, along with Paris Saint-Germain hotshot Edinson Cavani is Ligue 1s top scorer with nine goals - is pocketing £12m per year tax-free and so, if Chelsea were to offer a replica package after tax, the Daily Mail claim they would need to pay the Colombian £450,000 per week which would work out at £117m over the course of a prospective five-year contract.

Considering Falcao cost Monaco £52m in the space of the summer they would look to recuperate at least that if they were to do a deal in the mid-season or summer market, meaning that, in terms of transfer fee plus salary, Falcao could cost Chelsea over £170m - would he be worth that?

Even if Jose Mourinho sold Demba Ba in January that would only cover Falcao's salary for 15 weeks as the Blues are hoping to receive £15m for the Senegalese striker, according to Sky Sports sources in Africa.

Ba is on the transfer shortlists at Arsenal, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, apparently, and may be joined by an out-of-favour winger in Kevin de Bruyne as his club and country team-mate Eden Hazard has urged him to seek an imminent exit.

Hazard, who recently faced disciplinary action over his absenteeism from the training ground, risks further wrath from the management as he reportedly told Het Nieuwsblad that: 'If he does not play, it is better for him to leave. Playing a World Cup after having not played for a year is very difficult. If we want to get the best from Kevin in the future it is better that he leaves.'

And finally, it may not be a post-goal celebration for Chelsea, but Samuel Eto'o has shown what he can orchestrate as Cameroon danced a merry tune having secured progression to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a seventh appearance at a World Cup finals and a record for an African nation.
