Top 5 Liverpool players according to Football Manager - no Coutinho?!

Brendan Rodgers

Football Manager 2014 is now out, but who do the creators think are Liverpool's best players?

With the game now released – many people are ready for another year of procrastination, pain and sporadic doses of pleasure – the attention will turn to how players are rated. Like them or loathe them, the ratings require a great deal of studying and deliberation to create the greatest football management simulation on the planet. And going by the judgement of assistant manager Colin Pascoe, here are the highest rated Liverpool players in the game...

Lucas Leiva (Central Midfielder) – Four Star Rating

Notable attributes: Determination 18, Tackling 17, Anticipation 17, Composure 17, Work Rate

A surprise top player here for Liverpool, with the underappreciated Lucas Leiva taking the top spot. The Brazilian international's best role in the game is as a defensive midfielder, and specifically as a “Half Back”, where he's able to drop deeper into spaces in front of the back four and dictate the play.

Steven Gerrard (Central Midfield) – Four Star Rating

Notable attributes: Determination 18, Passing 17, Penalty Taking 17, Bravery 17, Tackling 16

Gerrard is still a 'top top top' player, and it shows in Football Manager, despite approaching his 33rd birthday. With his determination, bravery and tackling attributes, Gerrard will be a valuable, hard working midfielder for anyone who plays as Liverpool, whilst his above average attributes for free kicks, long shots and finishing should enable him to contribute goals from midfield.

Luis Suarez (Striker) – Three and a half Star Rating

Notable attributes: Determination 19, Dribbling 18, Technique 17, Flair 17, Work Rate 17

Something of a shock to see the Uruguayan as only the third highest rated player, but his ability to play in all attacking midfield positions makes him versatile. He has high determination and work rate, but as well as being a nuisance for defenders, his technical attributes and flair will make him a player to build around.

Glen Johnson (Right Back) – Three and a half Star Rating

Notable attributes: Natural Fitness 17, Decisions 16, Balance 16, Dribbling 15, First Touch 15

Johnson is an incredibly athletic full back who has high physical attributes, particularly in Natural Fitness and Balance. Johnson can be played all along the right hand side of the field, as well as at centre back, left back and left wing back. Aside from his athletic ability, Johnson also has high attributes in Ball Control, Dribbling and Technique.

Daniel Agger (Central Defence) – Three Star Rating

Notable attributes: Bravery 16, Composure 16, Determination 16, Positioning 16, Team Work 16

Agger is the best central defender Liverpool have on the game, and should be paired with either Mamadou Sakho or Martin Skrtel. Agger's best role is as a ball playing defender, and his better-than-average stats – for a centre back – in long shots, passing and technique make him a vital member of the Liverpool squad.
