French football has recently been askewed by the purchase of two top teams - that has effectively plunged the others into oblivion. Despite Montpellier’s mini-resistance in 2011-12 Ligue 1 is now entering the Paris Saint-Germain or AS Monaco era as both dominate the transfer market and football pitch with their vast wealthy owners watching on, hands rubbing, from the stands.
For PSG it was Qatar, for Monaco a Russian - who bought the club after his wife divorced him (that's one way to deal with it we suppose). But despite Monaco being his first choice, the clubs wealthy owner Dmitry Rybolovlev admits that he fell in love with football in the UK - at Stamford Bridge.
So much so he even considered buying into an English club, that club being Manchester United:
"Before Monaco, I was interested in other clubs like Manchester United, where I had a box. But AS Monaco is a club with a long and beautiful story, a team of local and national significance. In that sense it is unique."
So what would Dmitry’s United look like. Well they might have got a player they have always admired, especially former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scot never made a secret of his admiration for Colombian James Rodriguez. Compared from a young age to Cristiano Ronaldo he was on the radar of Sir Alex before he admitted:
"As far as James Rodriguez is concerned, I hope it's not true because it costs a fortune to get a player from Porto!"
But if Rybolovlev was around at the time you can guarantee Fergie would have got his man. So far Claudio Ranieri has simply jotted down a wish list, an absurd one as well, and his wealthy benefactor has obliged him. One such man of course being Rodriguez -who signed from FC Porto in the summer for €45 million.
Falcao, Moutinho, Rodriguez, Abidal, Carvalho, Toulalan and soon to be Victor Valdes if you believe the Spanish press - it is an absurd amount of spending power on their hands.
Dmitry’s Monaco are good, but Dmitry’s United would have been the best. With a seemingly unlimited pool of money, who knows what type of team could have been assembled there?
