Arsenal are the latest club to be linked with move for Stephan El Shaarawy
Stephan El Shaarawy was on many club's shopping lists in the summer but AC Milan were reluctant to let him leave. However he now finds himself behind Alessandro Matri and Mario Balotelli in the pecking order, and could be tempted by offers elsewhere.
Arsenal are the latest club to be linked with the 21-year-old and could make a move in January according to The Express. The club have been linked with many attackers with Olivier Giroud being their only out and out striker currently. Karim Benzema has also been linked and both he and El Shaarawy would want first-team football rather than just being a back up to Giroud. Manchester City have also been linked with the Savona-born player in the past. But with Stevan Jovetic yet to feature much, it seems an unnecessary signing for the Manchester club.
El Shaarawy has only featured two times in Serie A for Milan this season, which is surprising seen as though they have had a very disappointing start. The Italian giants have only claimed 13 points from their 12 matches in Serie A so far this season. They have already lost five games and are 19 points adrift of Roma at the top of the table. Given the attacking options available to Milan it is surprising that they have only scored 17 goals at this stage.
Alessandro Matri has been preferred to El Shaarawy by manager Massimiliano Allegri, although he has only found the net once in the league. El Shaarawy will be frustrated by his limited chances and a move back to Genoa has also been rumoured. Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has stated that he would love to bring back the creative player.
With AC Milan currently well off the pace as regards to a Champions League spot in Serie A, a move to Arsenal could appeal to the former Genoa player. Arsenal are currently enjoying one of their better seasons in recent times and look like they should be able to at least finish in the top four at the end of the season. However AC Milan look like they will progress to the knockout rounds of this years competition along with Arsenal.
With Allegri under pressure, and clubs in Italy usually trigger happy, El Sharaawy could be waiting for his departure. He then could find himself in the new manager's plans. These are all if's and but's though.
What is apparent is that his lack of game time now is affecting his chances of making Italy's World Cup squad. So if there is an offer for his services in January and his situation hasn't changed he may well be tempted to move on.
