Liverpool latest: Gerrard out of England game, Suso suffers injury blow in Spain

The latest news and views about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will miss England’s friendly against Chile this Friday. The midfielder is carrying a hip problem and will not be risked meaning Chelsea’s Frank Lampard is likely to step in as captain for his 100th cap for his country.

Liverpool youngster Suso has revealed the reason he hasn’t been included in the Spain under-21 squad is because of a groin problem. The teenager has been in fine form on loan at Almeria in La Liga this season.

“Lopetegui spoke to me before the squad was announced, I was overloaded and had discomfort in the groin and told him. And he told me not to worry about the qualifiers, that there were more colleagues eager to go,” he told reporters.

Simon Mignolet has revealed he hopes Liverpool can pick up where they left off when the international break is over. Liverpool are second in the table, just two points behind Arsenal.

“Things are going well with Liverpool - we won 4-0 last week. We have to build on that start and make sure that, after the international break, we keep doing the things we are doing,” the Belgian told Sky Sports News.

Daniel Agger has claimed that a top four finish for Liverpool would be a superb achievement by the current squad. The Dane said all of the key players in the first team squad are desperate to play Champions League football again.

Former Liverpool star John Aldridge says Daniel Sturridge’s hunger to score goals should be applauded. Aldridge says it was clear how desperate Sturridge was to score in the win against Fulham.

“Sturridge was desperate to score at Anfield on Saturday He was very disappointed when he came off having not registered in Liverpool’s win over Fulham. But don’t mistake his frustration for a bad attitude. Sturridge is a goal-scorer who wants to score goals,” he wrote in the Liverpool Echo.

Liverpool supporters in the Kop at Anfield were threatened with ejection from the stadium last weekend against Fulham. Supporters displayed a banner before the Premier League game against West Brom protesting against high ticket prices and stewards said anyone holding the banner last weekend would be booted out of the ground.

In a lighter hearted story, Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho has revealed Sturridge calls him David Blaine after the American magician. Sturridge makes the reference in relation to Coutinho’s apparent ability to fool opposition players with his skill and movement.

In transfer news, Liverpool will face competition from Roma if they move for Argentinean youngster Juan Iturbe. The 20-year-old is on loan at Hellas Verona from FC Porto and Roma are thought to now be leading the race to sign him.
