A Sky Sports survey has revealed overwhelming support for Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Ballon d’Or.
The prestigious award has belonged to Lionel Messi in recent years but UK based fans have voted and 84% of fans who took part in a Sky Sports survey suggested the Real Madrid forward deserved to win the 2013 award.
Ronaldo is hailed as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, unlucky to have been playing in the same era as Lionel Messi at Barcelona, otherwise the Portuguese may well be considered the greatest ever player.
Messi received just 8% of the vote as Ronaldo stands his best chance in recent memory of beating the Argentine to the golden ball, honouring a fantastic career with Real Madrid so far which has seen him score a staggering 162 goals in 148 league games.
With Messi out injured for eight to ten weeks it now looks certain that Ronaldo will stroll his way to the award, which has eluded him for the past four years, with Messi picking up the tribute every single time.
The only other player to feature on the poll with any real note was Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich with 6% of the vote, a player that several have suggested deserves to be honoured with the Ballon d’Or tribute at some point in his career.
