Liverpool star: Gerrard played part in my England call-up

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson says his improvement this season is partly down to the influence of his team-mate Steven Gerrard.

Henderson has come in for criticism since he joined the Reds in June 2011, but has been in impressive form this season, starting all of Liverpool’s Premier League games.

And he says that training alongside Gerrard, who has spent more than a decade playing for the Merseyside team and won a host of trophies, has had a major impact on his game.

He said: “I think I have improved since last time. Stevie helps me develop all the time in training and off the pitch. And when you play with him, you learn a lot.”

Henderson was included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the upcoming matches against Chile and USA, more than a year after he last played for the Three Lions against Italy at the World Cup, and he says he is determined to fight for his place in the national side.

“It is up for grabs for anyone,” Henderson said. “If you are doing well and your team is doing well then people will be looking at you. But you have to take the chance.

“Now I have the opportunity to go and train with England and I have to make sure I am right. “I think I have improved definitely over the last few years. I have to keep doing that and keep improving as time goes on. I’m delighted to be back in the squad.”
