Injury blow for Arsenal captain Vermaelen?

Arsenal have a slight concern over the fitness of captain Thomas Vermaelen.

The Arsenal skipper returned to the starting line-up against Manchester United last weekend and produced an efficient performance, almost as though he’d never been out of the side.

However, that initial positivity will now be mixed in with some bleak news as Vermaelen is carrying a calf problem and is a doubt for Belgium’s friendly against Colombia this Friday.

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has confirmed that Arsenal requested the defender went for a scan on the knock and it’s unclear how serious the problem is that he’s carrying.

“Vermaelen felt something in his calf (after the United game) and left at the request of Arsenal for a scan,” Wilmots told Sport Wereld.

Vermaelen replaced an ill Per Mertesacker who should return to the Arsenal side following the international break to resume his productive partnership with Laurent Koscielny in the centre of Arsenal’s defence.

However, Gunners everywhere will have their fingers crossed that Vermaelen returns to North London after the break without his calf problem growing worse, because he remains a very important player for the club.
