Inter Milan defender Javier Zanetti has revealed that before being given the captain’s armband with the Italian side, he was on the verge of signing for Real Madrid.
The 40-year-old has held the armband with the Serie A giants since 1999, but has claimed that, at the turn of the Millennium, he had talks with the Santiago Bernabeu team.
“I was about to leave, for a very important team in Spain, such as Real Madrid,” Zanetti has reflected this week to Videonews.
“But if I had to leave, I wanted to leave a mark for Inter.
“Then I was given the captain’s armband and it was a beautiful responsibility.
“Everything that came after that was something extraordinary.”
