The derby between Salernitana and Nocerina was called off after less than 20 minutes as the visitors were intentionally reduced to six men.
Nocerina had delayed kick-off by over half an hour after the team refused to get off their bus saying that they had been threatened by their own supporters and told not to play.
The game did eventually kick off but the visiting side made three substitutions in the first two minutes before players started limping off with suspicious 'injuries'.
One Nocerina player was sent off for a fight with an opponent and the steady stream of players hobbling off left the referee with no choice but to call the match off.
The motive for the fans' behaviour seems to have been that they were banned from attending the match and so wanted it called off.
Following the game, all of Nocerina's directors resigned, leaving the club in chaos and facing heavy sanctions.
This is by no means the first time players in Italy's lower leagues have reported being threatened by their fans and the power exercised by the Ultras is often startling.
