Spanish based journalist - Former Arsenal man deserves recognition

Alex Song

Spanish based journalist Graham Hunter has suggested Alex song is not getting the recognition he deserves.

The former Arsenal man started in midfield for the Spanish champions yesterday as they strolled to a 4-1 win against Real Betis to retain their domination of La Liga this season.

Song was one of the surprise performers in a game that saw Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas both pick up injuries, which could mean a better chance of regular football for Song after the international break.

Spanish based journalist Graham Hunter tweeted about Song's performance during the game, stating that he deserves more praise while slamming the Cataln media for often overlooking the midfielder.

Song has been used sparingly by Gerardo Martino so far this season, making five starts and one sub appearance in La Liga to go with two sub appearances in the Champions League.

He threw down a marker of intent yesterday to Martino, proving that he can be more than just a holding midfielder, with his pass for Neymar’s opener as good as any pass one of Barca’s more creative players could have come up with.

The problem for Song has been that he’s playing at a club where there are so many good central midfield options. Unless those players make consistent mistakes, very unlikely, he is always going to struggle to get regular first team action.

There has been talk in the recent past of a possible return to the Premier League for Song and that’s something he may have to consider next summer if he fails to get the football, and in the eyes of Hunter, and recognition which has been missing.

He’s a little unfortunate that Sergio Busquets has been so consistent for so long in that holding midfield role otherwise he may well enjoy a higher degree of praise than he’s attracted so far in Spanish football.
