While United staff were reportedly keeping tabs on potential targets, it was a man once linked with their fierce rivals who stole the headlines .
Last night we brought you a story on Manchester United’s scouting mission to Portugal, with David Moyes’ staff reportedly taking a closer look at four players long-linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
But it was another player who caught the eye; a man previously linked not with United but with Manchester City.
Back in the summer, prior to the arrival of Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic, the Blues were linked with a move for Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo.
With Carlos Tevez leaving for Juventus, the Paraguay forward was tipped for a £17million move to the Etihad.
A player with innate goal-scoring ability and an apparently faltering relationship with his current club, Cardozo seemed the perfect solution for incoming manager Manuel Pellegrini.
In the end, he looked elsewhere, and in Negredo he found a man who is forming a devastating partnership with Sergio Aguero.
Bur reports this weekend claimed Pellegrini would be rewarded for Champions League progression with another spending spree – with both a defender and another striker said to be his priorities.
Even with the goal-scorers at his disposal, he may well have seen the events in Portugal at the weekend and wondered if it was worth an offer for one of the few men United were not there to see.
