England boss Roy Hodgson has said he will ask Steven Gerrard not to retire from playing international football if he has to. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has suggested Gerrard might retire from playing for England after the next World Cup.
“So if after the World Cup – and hopefully he has a good World Cup – Steven says he wants to retire and I think ‘don’t do that, carry on’, I would be more than happy to have that conversation,” said the England coach.
Jose Enrique has piled praise onto Gerrard suggesting that his age is irrelevant to his capability as a player. Enrique has suggested Gerrard would be a good player even at 50-years-old.
“He has been playing fantastic like always. He's our captain and he's been really, really important for us - at 50 years of age, he will still be doing the same thing! He will always have that and his quality is amazing,” he told reporters.
Brendan Rodgers says he’s confident that his Liverpool team will be ready for the Merseyside derby after the current international break.
“Now our focus goes straight away to the next game – Hopefully we can take confidence from Saturday’s performance and seven wins out of 11 at the start of the season,” he told the Liverpool website.
In transfer news, Liverpool have been reported as one of the sides to have an interest in Southampton star Jay Rodriguez. The forward was recently called up to the England national squad by Roy Hodgson for matches against Chile this Friday and Germany next week.
Liverpool will go head-to-head with Manchester United to sign Fulham youngster Moussa Dembele according to today’s reports. Dembele made the switch to Fulham from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and has been one of the stand out performers in their youth team.
One player who will be leaving this winter is Raheem Sterling with Sunday’s papers suggesting Swansea City as the most likely loan destination for the teenager. Sterling recently urged Liverpool to let him go on loan so he could play regular first team football.
Former Liverpool star Yossi Benayoun could find himself on the way to Spain. The Israeli was thought to be the attention of Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers but he seems set for a switch to Spain, with Malaga thought to be interested.
On loan Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom was forced to abandon his car after using his SatNav to try and find Derby County’s stadium. Wisdom got stuck on a deserted woodland track and was forced to abandon his car after it became stuck in thick, heavy mud.
Miguel Reina, father of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, has revealed the shot stopper agreed a deal to join Barcelona last summer before the deal collapsed. Reina is currently on loan from Liverpool at Serie A side Napoli.
