Manchester United latest: Including Arsenal reaction and Vidic update

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United beat Arsenal 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The win takes the champions up to fifth place, five points off the leaders and in contention in the title race after a difficult start.

Manager David Moyes expects a close title race following the victory.

"I don't think anyone's going to run away with it," said Moyes.

"I think there [will be] a lot of ups and downs. It's a close-run league this year. There will be a few shocks."

Striker Wayne Rooney says United ‘aim to be top’ by New Year.

The other results today and yesterday also gave us a boost and we are right back in it now. It's a massive lift, a great weekend for us ahead of the international break. Our aim is to be top or thereabouts at the New Year." He explained.

United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has backed United to win the title.

"I think we are still very much in the race to win the title,” he stated.

Youngster Phil Jones believes United ‘answered their critics’ with the win.

"It proves when people doubt us, we are more than capable of standing up for ourselves and proving to people that is why we were champions last season," Jones told PA Sport.

"We weren't champions for nothing. We thoroughly deserved all the points we got last season. This is a step in the right direction going into a busy period.”

"People want us to fail because we have won the league so many times. United won the league long before I was here. Everyone hates the best clubs, it is as simple as that. We enjoy that and relish the test we get thrown at us week in, week out," he added.

In team news, captain Nemanja Vidic suffered concussion in the clash with the Gunners but has been released from hospital today.

In other news, United have been named football’s most ‘influential brand’.
