Gary Neville was actively engaging with fans ahead of the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal this afternoon when he made an astonishing claim.
Neville raised the question of how many fans would be prepared to break up a solid back four defensive unit, to get a more talented player into the defence and he used Arsenal as an example.
The current centre back pairing between Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny has looked world class this season and potentially one of the best defensive partnerships in the world. The case in point is the way they played against Borussia Dortmund last week.
The Gunners have the second best defensive record in the Premier League having conceded nine goals, with only Tottenham and Southampton having conceded fewer.
However, Neville has suggested that Vermaelen is more talented than Arsenal’s current centre back pairing, which suggests he feels the Belgian has been unlucky not to feature more for Arsene Wenger this season.
The question is how many of you if you were a manager would split of a well drilled back 4 to put in a supposedly more talented player!— Gary Neville (@GNev2) November 10, 2013
A good case in Point that Vermaalen more talented than current 2. However these 2 work together. Cah/Luiz/JT- Best pair/ Most talented?— Gary Neville (@GNev2) November 10, 2013
