But in truth there is only one thing United fans will be thinking about this afternoon – their 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford.
A first-half header from Robin van Persie against his former club proved to be decisive, and while the Gunners had the better of the second 45 minutes, David Moyes' side held the visitors at bay.
Nemanja Vidic suffered a head injury and did not reappear after the interval, leaving the impressive Phil Jones to move from midfield into defence. And United suffered slightly through the change, so dominant had the young England international been early on.
But another excellent performance from Wayne Rooney, along with a couple of heart-in-mouth moments late on, saw the champions climb to just five points behind league leaders Arsenal.
In quotes published by the Manchester Evening News, Rooney revealed that tactics to target Arsenal’s smaller players from set-pieces worked.
“We worked on free-kicks and corners as Arsenal have a lot of smaller players in the team and that could give us the opportunity to get a goal, and thankfully it paid off.”
It has since been confirmed that Vidic was taken to hospital as a result of the head injury he suffered following an accidental clash with David de Gea.
The Chilean’s impressive volley made it five goals in 10 appearances.
