Manchester City weekend round-up: ‘Keeper, defender and forward tipped to arrive

Victor Valdes

All the news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad this weekend…

Manchester City experienced déjà vu earlier today, when a visit to Sunderland saw them suffer a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a Phil Bardsley strike.

The former Manchester United man curled in a low shot midway through the first half, but it was another ex-United man – Wes Brown – who was crowned man-of-the-match by Sky Sports, time and again repelling City’s previously devastating strike-force.

The result left City in seventh place, although they have since been leapfrogged by United following their victory against Arsenal.

Costel Pantilimon was again preferred to Joe Hart in the City goal, and we brought you a story yesterday detailing Peter Schmeichel’s thoughts on the matter.

The former City stopper believed Manuel Pellegrini was wrong to drop the England man and that the Blues’ defensive problems stretched further than just the man between the posts.

Speaking of Hart, the Daily Star Sunday claimed this morning that he could soon be on his way out of the Etihad all together, with City keen to bring in Barcelona’s Victor Valdes, although previous reports have claimed the Spaniard will move to Monaco when he leaves the Nou Camp next year.

In further transfer news, the Mirror reports that Pellegrini’s reward for steering his club to the knock-out stages of the Champions League will be a January spending spree.

The paper claims a striker and a defender are top of the Chilean’s shopping list, although given the forwards already at his disposal, another goal-scorer is surely the last thing on his mind.

His defence is certainly in need of strengthening though, if only given the fact that injuries continue to rob him of a consistent back-four.

FC Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi have been mentioned once more.
