Five facts about Newcastle and Norwich target Ola Toivonen

The Swedish international is out of contract in the summer and could be on his way to the Premier League in January. But who is he?

Contract talks between Ola Toivonen and his club PSV Eindhoven are ongoing but if a new deal stalls then he could be on his way to Newcastle for £2.5 million according to this morning’s newspapers.

Chris Hughton’s Norwich were linked with a move in the summer and could also come back in with a bid in January if negotiations fall flat between player and club. So here are five things you may not have known about the attacking midfielder.

1) Toivonen began his career with Swedish club Degerfors IF before moving on to Orgryte IS in 2006.

2) He was named the 2006 Newcomer of the Year at the Swedish football awards.

3) He became Malmo FF’s second most expensive player of all time when he signed in 2007. The most expensive signing for the club was Brazilian striker Afonso Alves who went on to join Middlesbrough via Heerenveen.

4) After scoring 14 times in 27 games in 2008, he went on to sign for PSV in 2009. In 2010-11, he scored 18 goals in all competitions.

5) He has six goals for his country which have come in 35 appearances including one in a 3-0 friendly victory over Scotland in August 2010.
