Spanish international has suggested that the Argentinian could move away from Barcelona and head to England's top division in the future.
In recent years, the Premier League has lost star players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to La Liga but could England gain the Spanish top flight's biggest commodity, Lionel Messi, in the future? Manchester City's Alvaro Negredo thinks so.
The striker who joined City from Sevilla in the summer said, “I could see someone like Messi coming to England and following players like David Silva, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, David de Gea and myself. He could play well in any league in the world.
“Maybe in two or five years he will get bored with La Liga, want a change and come over here.”
He also gave a glowing reference to his new footballing surroundings, saying that “The Premier League is the best place to be for the world’s top stars. Having been here for a few months it is better than I thought it would be. Your expectations go up here.”
There's no denying that Messi joining an English club would be a major boost to the division but the stumbling block is the fact that only a few teams would be able to make the move a reality. One of those being Negredo's new side in the blue half on Manchester.
The fee would smash the world record £86 million that Madrid paid Tottenham for Bale in August and humungous wages would make him the highest paid player ever seen in English football.
Exciting to think of seeing him here though, isn't it?
