Arsenal weekend round-up: Reaction to United defeat, trio of stars linked with Gunners

Arsenal

A round up of key news stories about Arsenal from the weekend.

Arsenal fell to their first away defeat since the North London derby last season, as they lost 1-0 at Manchester United. Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie scored the only goal of the game on a frustrating afternoon for the Gunners. However, several Arsenal fans reacted positively on Twitter despite the setback.

Arsenal super fan Piers Morgan and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville had a £5,000 bet riding on the match today with the proceeds going to charity. Neville was also in the news this morning when he suggested Thomas Vermaelen had more talent than Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny.

Key defender Per Mertesacker and midfielder Tomas Rosicky missed the match through illness, neither were significantly injured so there is no need for Arsenal fans to panic over their long term wellbeing.

The Mirror has suggested that Arsenal may revitalise their interest in Manchester City defender Micah Richards. Richards is a player the Gunners have been linked with in the past and the report suggests Arsene Wenger may take another look at the England man.

The Mirror has also suggested that Wenger is ready to tempt Real Madrid with a £22 million offer for Karim Benzema. The French forward was strongly linked with the Gunners last summer but the deal never happened as Benzema stayed the primary striker at the Bernabeu.

Another player that Arsenal have been linked with today is Barcelona star Pedro. Similarly to Richards, Pedro has started only seven games in La Liga at his club this season, which could tempt him into a move away with the next World Cup just around the corner.

Current striker Nicklas Bendtner has also hit the headlines at the Gunners this weekend, with some not so positive chat about his current employers. Bendtner says he’s aiming to become the perfect item for sale this January.

“I was ready to move on and I don’t think they wanted to keep me - I am going to build myself up so that I will be this powerful machine, the perfect item for sale,” said the forward.

In a more romantic story to appear on the news feeds this weekend is how the European press have taken to Aaron Ramsey. SportWitness ran a piece which showcased the positive press reception that the Welshman has been getting across various European news sources.
