Manchester United's Transfer Window: Mangala, Baines, and...?

Leighton Baines

David Moyes needs reinforcements at Old Trafford in January, and with a huge transfer kitty available, who should he look to bring in? Olly Dawes looks ahead...

With Manchester United enduring a rocky start to the season, the Glazer family are reportedly set to back David Moyes by handing him a January transfer budget of up to £100m, in order to try and save their season and retain the Premier League title.

The Daily Express also suggest that Moyes will look to sell a number of players in the New Year, including Rafael, Anderson, as well as wingers Nani and Ashley Young, which could even raise the budget higher, though it's unlikely that Moyes will spend more than £100m in a month.

Assuming Moyes has that sort of money to spend in January, who should he sign to improve an underwhelming United side?

  • Eliaquim Mangala, Porto - £30m

The French centre back is wanted by the world's top clubs, including Barcelona and Chelsea, and Porto want in the region of £30m for his services. United have something of an advantage though, as Porto have admitted an interest in Anderson, and Moyes could offer the Brazilian as a makeweight in a deal to tie up Mangala. Experienced defenders Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand look set to leave Old Trafford, which will force Moyes to bring in a new centre back.

  • Stephan Lichtsteiner, Juventus - £10m

Moyes is apparently unconvinced by Brazilian full back Rafael, and whilst Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have filled in at right back this season, United will need to find a full time replacement for Rafael should they sell him. Recent speculation has suggested United are set to make a move for Lichtsteiner, with the Swiss international potentially available from Juventus. A £10m fee has been suggested, which would be a smart move despite the former Lazio full back approaching his 30th birthday.

  • Leighton Baines, Everton - £15m

Baines has been a target for Moyes ever since he switched Everton for United, and has been trying to make sure the England left back makes the same move. Patrice Evra has suggested that he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, making Baines an obvious target for Moyes and United. Everton now seem willing to let Baines move to United in January after many years of loyal service, and won't stand in the 29 year old's way as he looks set for the biggest move of his career.

  • Miralem Pjanic, Roma - £25m

Pjanic was first linked to United last week, as Moyes looks to bring in a creative central midfielder. Having missed out on Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera on deadline day, Moyes appears to be turning his attention to other players, and 23 year old Pjanic fits the bill perfectly. Roma's pursuit of Yohan Cabaye seems to suggest that they are planning for life without the Bosnian, and whilst a £25m fee may seem somewhat excessive, he has the talent - and potential - to make it worthwhile.

  • Arda Turan, Atletico Madrid - £20m

United's wingers have blown hot and cold for well over a year now, with Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young failing to nail down a regular spot in the team. Whilst Adnan Januzaj has impressed since breaking into the team, Moyes needs somebody on the opposite flank, and was thwarted in his bid to sign Turan late in the last transfer window. A £20m release clause is in the Turk's contract, and would be a huge improvement on the current crop of disappointing wingers.

The total spend here would be around £100m, which as alluded to earlier, is incredibly unlikely, but Moyes has seemingly showed an interest in all five players, and could make moves for them in the New Year.
