The Italian coach has explained the reasons behind Ozil’s decision to leave the Bernabeu, suggesting the midfielder was not prepared to dig in and fight for his place at the club.
However, as far as Ancelotti is concerned, Real Madrid aren’t suffering because of their Argentinean winger Angel di Maria.
“I prefer to have [Angel] Di Maria for the team's balance. Di Maria is better than Ozil for group dynamics,” Ancelotti told Onda Cero.
Di Maria has been a main component of the Real Madrid side this season, featuring in a combination of 16 matches over La Liga and the Champions League, scoring three goals and weighing in with six vital assists.
He’s a very important part of the Real Madrid side, especially as back up to the two superstar wide players at the club in Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
Ozil’s quality has been perfectly demonstrated during his brief spell already at Arsenal so Ancelotti’s comments may contain a little resentment that the German chose to leave the club, rather than staying.
That would be perfectly understandable because any side would be better off for having a player like Ozil in the heart of their midfield.
“Mesut understood that he had competition, that he wouldn't be able to play every game, and 'I'm off' was his answer,” said the Italian.
Ozil’s versatility is also very underrated. One of the most obvious reasons for preferring di Maria is because he can play down either side of the midfield but Ozil has covered multiple positions for the Gunners this season.
He can play at attacking midfield, in behind the main striker, he can slot into a central position and pull the strings and he’ll also do a decent job on either side of the midfield if that’s where Arsene Wenger asks him to play.
Arsenal and the club’s fans won’t care one little bit because in their eyes they have the better player and certainly wouldn’t swap the German for the Argentinean if that deal was put on the table.
