Liverpool are still in the mix for the title, even if defeat to Arsenal last weekend made it look as if they weren’t. The Gunners might have been the better team, but were it not for Martin Atkinson’s over-officiousness Jordan Henderson tucked one away at The Emirates.
But they are one team who certainly need to add at least one player in January if they are to go on and win a memorable Premier League title.
We can all agree that a striker is not what they need, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez will do that job ably.
They also have a wealth of defensive options now, even if a decision has not been made on whether to play three, four or five at the back.
So where do they need to improve.
For me, one area where they were shown up against Arsenal was in the heart of midfield. Steven Gerrard brings you plenty of industry these days, but age is beginning to catch up with him in regards to a consistently high level of performance. Philippe Coutinho should return from injury soon and continue the form that saw him so highly regarded toward the end of 2012-13.
But the other two players, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson might have their obvious plusses, but they also have revealing flaws.
Neither have the creative ability needed for Rodgers’ system to thrive. Both are more physical beings, who use their natural strength, fitness and power to implement their game - neither is technically cute enough to start the moves that would feed Gerrard, Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and co.
For me the perfect player to take that position is Yohan Cabaye.
The Newcastle United midfielder is strong in the tackle but also gifted in terms of passing the ball - and would have French buddies in the form of Mamadou Sakho and Aly Cissokho at the club.
He wanted a move to Arsenal this summer - so why not Liverpool in the winter, it might just be the title winning signing.
