Chelsea are always going to be in the hunt for the title this season, but despite their already extensive strength in depth they clearly need to bring in at least one more player in order to secure the title.
Which signing in January could win them the Premier League?
First of all you need to identify an area in which Chelsea need to improve, which can be very difficult considering their squad size.
One thing they certainly don’t need is an attacking midfielder, while the defence has the personnel to survive - they may just need to be rejigged positionally for Mourinho to get them playing well.
The strikers are a major talking point, and yes Torres, Eto’o and Ba are inconsistent, but simply put I cannot see Mourinho bringing in another in a January window who can make a significant impact on the first-team.
For me, they need another defensive minded midfielder. Their frailty in this position was horribly clear against Newcastle United last weekend.
Ramires was often caught out of position whilst asking Frank Lampard to play there is like asking a lion to play with a ball of yarn.
It is simply not the veteran’s best position and it showed as Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye ran the show at St James Park.
Michael Essien is not exactly going to solve the issue, while on a personal level I believe John Obi Mikel is massively overrated.
No a new acquisition seems to be the best option, and Sami Khedira could be the perfect man for the job.
The German international plays the role perfectly, with minimal fuss - and is not having the best of times in Spain at the moment.
He was recently heavily criticised by the Spanish media and he is not getting much game time since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti in Madrid.
He was a heavy supporter of Mourinho’s reign at the Bernabeu and was also left upset with the sale of close friend Mesut Ozil to Arsenal in the summer.
Rumours suggest they could be reunited in London for £30 million, and that might just be what they need to win the Premier League this season.
