Liverpool rival Manchester United for ex-Chelsea midfielder

Nemanja Matic

Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes are both looking to strengthen their midfields in January.

It is no secret that Manchester United have been looking to bring in a midfielder for some time now. Marouane Fellaini looks increasingly like a panic buy given the fact that he is yet to properly fit into the United team. He is a good player, but it doesn't look like he was necessarily the one they needed this year. David Moyes is now said to be looking at making a bid for Benfica's Nemanja Matic.

He would face some competition from Liverpool however. After Liverpool's superb start to the season, Brendan Rodgers wants to add a few faces in January to ensure the season doesn't fizzle out.

Nemanja Matic was at Chelsea from 2009 to 2011 but barely ever featured. He spent his second and last season out on loan at Chelsea's feeder club Vitesse Arnhem. When Chelsea splurged out £21 million for the services of David Luiz, they also allowed Matic to move to Benfica as part of the deal. With Matic now being valued around the £25m mark, the David Luiz deal is proving to be a very costly one.

The Serbian international came to prominence last season for Benfica as they enjoyed an exceptional campaign that would ultimately end in disaster. In the final few weeks of the season they found themselves unbeaten in the league with just two games left and also in the domestic cup final, and the Europa League final. After losing the penultimate league match against eventual Primeira Liga winners Porto they would also lose both cup finals.

Napoli are also said to be interested in Matic and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said that he has been told Benfica would be willing to sell the player for around £25m. This would represent a cheaper option for Manchester United than other targets such as Ander Herrera and Sami Khedira.

Liverpool may see Matic as a long term replacement for Gerrard or as someone to play instead of the injury prone Lucas Leiva. Either way they do still have some money left in the transfer kitty after they had some large bids rejected for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Diego Costa.

Can you see Liverpool and Manchester United both making moves for Nemanja Matic?
