Tottenham latest: AVB believes side is better at breaking down defences, forward calls Bale comparisons pointless

The top stories involving Spurs from today.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas is wary of the threat that Newcastle will possess in the early kick-off on Sunday, and thinks that his side will improve when it comes to trying to break down sides who like to put men behind the ball.

He said: ‘We just have to make sure we are up to our level, we weren't for example in the game against West Ham, we hope to be solid and create as much as we can.

'It hasn’t been easy for us to try and break in behind but we will persist as this is the way we want to move forward.'

'Hopefully we can one day manage to do more combinations that will lead to more goals being created.'

Erik Lamela has said that any comparisons between himself and Gareth Bale are pointless after showing why the club spent £30m to bring him to White Hart Lane from Roma.

Lamela is quoted in the Daily Mail, saying: 'Bale is at Real Madrid, one of the most important clubs in the world. He is who he is, and I am who I am.

'People have said many things about me and about the other players who joined last summer. Everyone can bring his own qualities and give his best for the team but it is wrong to say I was brought here to replace Bale.’

Defender Vlad Chiriches believes a win over Newcastle at the weekend will be an important one for the side ahead of the international break, and is keen for the side to pick up another clean sheet.

He told the club’s website: ‘It’s good for our position if we can go into the break with a win.

‘I feel very good about the clean sheets. It’s a good feeling for all the team to have so many games without conceding any goals, and it’s a good thing for us in the long term.’

Three men hired by Spurs have pleaded guilty to spying on West Ham during the battle over the future of the Olympic Stadium, reports the Daily Mail.

Spurs lost out in the bid for the stadium to West Ham.
