Predicted Manchester United XI to play Arsenal - Three changes from Sociedad draw

Old Trafford 2

Match to be played on Sunday 10th November 2013 at 16:10. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.

Manchester United go into this weekend’s game against Arsenal on a decent unbeaten run although David Moyes will be looking for more from his team following the mid-week 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad.

United should be looking for a solid win ahead of this game, which would take them potentially onto the same number of points as Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool currently in the top four.

David Moyes will make changes to the starting eleven that played against Sociedad and away at Fulham last weekend, with several players touch and go to be fully fit ahead of the match.

Here’s the side Moyes may go with.

GK – David De Gea

One of the constants throughout this season for Manchester United has been goalkeeper David De Gea. He should retain his place in the starting line-up, provide strength from the back which will be crucial keeping the defence organised against a talented Arsenal attack.

RB – Phil Jones

Jones came on late during the 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad and if Rafael isn’t fit enough to play, Jones should slot in on the right hand side of defence. He offers reliability and protection on that side, able to cover for a centre back if they get pulled out of position.

CB – Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand made it through the match against Sociedad without any problems and he should keep his place in central defence. His experience, presence and strength will be important in terms of dealing with Olivier Giroud.

CB – Nemanja Vidic

Vidic should also play on the other side of central defence. This is the sort of game he should be relishing because it’s a chance for him to prove he’s still one of the best defenders at the club. He’s well suited to deal with any aerial balls the Gunners try to put into the box.

LB – Patrice Evra

Evra will continue at left-back and he should also relish this match. Evra is very good defensively, tucking in close to Vidic and also pressing the wide man on his side of the pitch. He’ll also be a vital component of the attack when United enjoy a bit of possession further up the field.

RM – Antonio Valencia

Valencia will be a very important player on the counter attack. He can double up with whoever plays at right-back to protect the defence but his pace will be the decisive factor in breaking quickly, if Arsenal manage to build a lot of pressure over United.

CM – Michael Carrick

Fingers crossed for United fans that Carrick shakes off a calf problem and is fit for this game. He’s the best in the Premier League when it comes to stepping in and making interceptions, which is important against Arsenal who have so many players who like to spray the ball around inside the final third.

CM – Marouane Fellaini

It’s fair to say Fellaini didn’t have his best game against Sociedad but he’ll be an important player in this game. He adds that physical presence in the middle of the side and is someone United can use to stop Arsenal’s influential midfielders from getting on the ball regularly.

LM – Shinji Kagawa

In a match where keeping possession is going to be very important, Kagawa surely has to keep his place on the left. He won’t stay there, cutting inside when Evra goes forward and overlaps and he’s also one of the more creative players that United have available.

ST – Wayne Rooney

Rooney will start in attack but expect to see him dropping into midfield positions. Arsenal play a five man midfield which means it’s a job Rooney will have to do if Moyes doesn’t want to see his side outnumbered in the middle.

ST – Robin van Persie

Van Persie should start after being named as a sub against Sociedad. He’s played well against his former employers in the recent past and is one of the only United players who can score a goal from the most obscure of half chances. He should be determined to put in a good performance.
