Manchester United identify Chelsea target as new Evra replacement

Spanish left back Alberto Moreno in demand by some of Europe's top teams.

Manchester United and Chelsea are on course for a battle over a player both see as a solution to their long-term left back concerns.

Sevilla full back Alberto Moreno has been linked to Old Trafford after recently debuting for the Spanish national team. But he could be turning out in red, white or blue after Real Madrid and Chelsea also expressed an interest.

With Patrice Evra 32, and yet to extend a contract that expires in the summer, United have made no secret of their pursuit of a top-level left back to come in and challenge the Frenchman for what may be his last year at the club. Moves for both Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao failed to come off in the transfer window, while Evra and his camp continue to make conflicting remarks about the possibility of staying on at Old Trafford.

Chelsea have similar issues with Ashley Cole, 33 next month. His contract is also up at the end of the season, and a series of niggling injuries have prevented him from showing his best form under Jose Mourinho this year. The Blues have Ryan Bertrand as backup for Cole, but the Portuguese remains unconvinced by the 24-year-old, who has just one appearance in the Premier League this season.

Finally, if Coentrao ends up leaving Real, to go to United or any other club, Carlo Ancelotti's side will be looking for somebody to come in to back up first choice Marcelo.

In short, all three clubs, three of the powerhouses of world football, may be looking for a new left back in the near future.

Whoever looks to Moreno may well have to meet his £25 million release clause after Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido stated he would not be able to leave for anything less. But with the situation particularly pressing at the two English giants, the Andalusian club may well get the bidding war they're hoping for.
