Southampton's great start to the season has not gone unnoticed by Roy Hodgson
There were a few surprises as the latest England squad was announced for the friendlies against Chile and Germany on the 15th and 19th November.
Much of the talk ahead of the announcement was about Saido Berahino, Ravel Morrison, and Luke Shaw. Three young stars who had caught many of the headlines in the Premier League so far this season. However none of the aforementioned have made the squad for the friendly matches. Their time will surely come in the future however, but it looks a little less likely now that they will make the final World Cup squad.
For two of Luke Shaw's teammates, their chances look a lot more promising having made the squad this time round. Adam Lallana is called up for the second time, with the first occasion over a year ago for a qualifying match against Ukraine which he did not feature in. Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez has won his first call-up to the squad having enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign. The former Burnley striker gets the call-up ahead of Saido Berahino having scored four goals so far this season.
Southampton now have a three man contingent in the England squad, with Lallana and Rodriguez joining Rickie Lambert in the squad. All three are attacking players and could become a significant force together for club and country.
Other inclusions worth a mention are that of Jordan Henderson and Kieran Gibbs. Henderson last played for England against Italy in 2012, but having played in all of Liverpool's Premier League games so far this season he has done enough to earn himself a place in the squad. Gibbs has had a good start to the season with Arsenal and gets the nod ahead of Luke Shaw. He faces a huge battle on his hands for a starting place though, in one of the strongest positions in the squad. Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines are also named in the squad and remain the favourites to travel to Brazil.
Roy Hodgson faced some questions over Joe Hart in his press conferences, and said that Joe Hart is the country's number one. He further went on to say that he will definitely start at least one of the two friendlies.
