Arsenal broke a 9-year record on Wednesday...

Ramsey Celebrates 2013

On Wednesday evening Arsenal beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion in the Champions League.

Aaron Ramsey’s goal in the 62nd minute of the game earned the Gunners three points to take back to North London following their 2-1 defeat to the German leaders at the Emirates.

However, unbeknownst to him, Ramsey ensured the Gunners broke a record that has stood for almost a decade – in 9 years no team has beaten both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich on their own turf in the same year.

Arsenal’s 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena back on the 13th March 2013 was not have been enough to see them progress through in the competition and the German champions went on to take the Champions League title from the hands of their domestic rivals Dortmund in the final at Wembley in May.

No team has beaten both the German giants at home since Schalke in 2004. Schalke beat Bayern Munich 1-0 at the Allianz on the 16th of October 2004 and went on to beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion on the 5th of December 2004. Since that date no team has done the double over the German duo in the same year until this week.

Back then it was Goncalves da Silva Ailton’s solitary goal against Dortmund that took all three points on the night, even though Schalke came second in the Bundesliga that year behind Bayern Munich. On Wednesday night Ramsey’s record-breaking goal saw Arsenal move top of their Champions League group.

Bayern Munich hold the record of the most Bundesliga wins with 22 titles won, Borussia Dortmund are some way off having won it five times and Bayern Munich have won the Champions League title fives times, coming and finalists five times with Dortmund having won once and been runners up once this year.
