Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has said he is waiting patiently for his opportunity to hold down a place in Liverpool’s first team, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Sterling featured heavily for Liverpool last season, an earned himself an England call-up in the process, but the current system of wing-backs being adopted by manager Brendan Rodgers is preventing him from getting in the side.

Sterling said: ‘I know I need to buckle up, train as hard as I can and keep progressing as a player. I’m still young and I know I’ve still got a lot to learn.

‘The manager has said to all of us not in the team at the moment that we’ve got to be on our toes. When the chance comes you’ve got to make sure you take it.’

Fellow young winger Jordon Ibe is set to be handed a new deal at the club, and Brendan Rodgers has said he may be willing to let the 17-year-old go out on loan to aid his development according to the Liverpool Post.

‘Jordon has been in and around the first team for most of the season but there is probably going to come a stage where he needs to go out and play games and feel the pressure.

‘But at 17 years of age, he still needs developing.’

Liverpool have been linked with Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel according to reports in the Daily Mirror and Daily Express.

It is believed that a fee of around £5-6m could land the winger as the Portuguese club are looking to raise funds. Marseille, Tottenham and Arsenal are also reported to be interested in the player – but Liverpool are said to have already had an offer of £3m turned down.

Captain Steven Gerrard considers Luis Suarez as the finest player he has ever shared a dressing room with, and has said the Uruguayan is the key for Liverpool’s chances of a successful season.

Gerrard said: ‘The only player who came close to producing what Luis has produced in a red shirt is Fernando Torres, but Luis has just pipped him for me.

‘His goals, his performances and his form will be the key whether we finish in the top four or not. Luis is the key.’
