Arsenal were linked with plenty of strikers this summer, looking to add support to Olivier Giroud for the season.
However the players they were after did not suggest a back-up option, more a rival to the Giroud throne.
Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain were the two main objects of Arsene Wenger’s affections but in the end he got neither of them, and Nicklas Bendtner is now the clubs second-choice striker.
His performance against Chelsea in the League Cup summed up their need for a new striker, while his free-kick pass in the corner to Mesut Ozil yesterday against Borussia Dortmund just summed him up perfectly.
Luckily for The Gunners, French striker Olivier Giroud has been banging in the goals, and keeping himself well and truly fit - so far the lack of striking options has not come back to bite Wenger and co.
But it was revealed in Italy today that The Gunners have been in touch about Fernando Llorente of Juventus, so a striker certainly seems to be an option for the club this January - and a wise one.
One other player has been Karim Benzema of Real Madrid. The Frenchman recently rediscovered some form after a woeful start to the season, but continues to be linked with a potential January exit - with some sources quoting prices as low as £17 million for the Les Bleus centre-forward.
But considering Giroud currently keeps him out of the French line-up - why would Arsenal want him?
Well one former French international striker believes the two can play together.
Talking to French TV Jean-Pierre Papin stated his belief that the two could play together.
"I would like to see Benzema and Giroud together, with Benzema just behind Giroud. I really respect the way Karim behaved when he was going through a difficult spell. He didn't say anything and continued working while he was getting ribbed left, right and centre. I think he's a good guy."
And Papin has some pretty good credentials to go by - if you count 228 goals in 438 career league games and 30 goals in 54 caps for France as good credentials that is.
What do you think? Could Arsenal pair the duo?
