Everton have been dealt yet another injury blow today, as Arouna Kone is ruled out for what could be the rest of the season after undergoing an operation on a troublesome knee cartilage injury.
The Ivorian, who was signed from Wigan Athletic for £6 million in the summer, has not played since picking up the injury against Hull City on the 19th October.
And recent scans have revealed operable cartilage damage that needs to be repaired, leaving him out of action for what is said to be the majority of the season. He joins Darron Gibson on the long-term absentee list.
Roberto Martinez has backed a change in the laws of the game regarding concussion. Hugo Lloris was knocked unconscious in the game between Everton and Tottenham on Sunday, but continued to play on - to much condemnation.
And Martinez feels the decision should now be taken out of the hands of the managers:
"If there is a strong view from the medical side that a concussed player should come off we should look into it and make a rule. I don't think it should be a manager's decision whether you take a player off or not. It should be part of the game and a law.’’
Everton are being heavily linked with Aiden McGeady today - as the Spartak Moscow winger has reiterated his desire to play in the Premier League.
The Irishman was once a target for Martinez at Wigan - and he is said to still be keen on bringing him into the club.
Newcastle United, Fulham and Aston Villa are also said to be interested in his services.
Everton youngster John Stones will not be going out on loan. Martinez believes there is no need for such a deal, considering the former Barnsley man is pushing for a first-team place at the club:
"He's earned that and I don't think he needs to go out on loan and play. Here he is learning on a daily basis from Jags (Phil Jagielka) and (Sylvain) Distin, and that's exactly what he needs. He's not the same player from pre-season, he's already gone to a different level.’’
Everton are now one of a growing throng of teams said to be eyeing up wantaway Manchester City midfielder Abdisalam Ibrahim.
The Norwegian is currently with Tippeligaen table-toppers Stromsgodset on loan, who look set to win the title this month.
But City are ready to let him go - with Godset, Everton, Newcastle United, Hull City and Crystal Palace all being linked along with several Spanish and French clubs.
Ross Barkley, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines are celebrating being part of the England team once again. There was however no place for Gareth Barry or Leon Osman.
