Boateng said about Schalke’s strategy facing Chelsea tonight: “We will wait for Chelsea. We will try to counterattack and wait for our opportunities.”
Winning heals all wounds, especially Adam Szalai’s wounds, the nominee for the next tough guy award.
In last weekend’s match against Hertha BSC Berlin suffered an injury from a blow to the ear. Straight after the clash he underwent surgery and will play tonight. He said: “I don’t see any problems, as the wound doesn’t hamper me at all. Sitting out training on Monday was purely a precautionary measure.”
Winning heals all wounds might also apply for the whole side. This year Schalke has an up and down season with five wins, two draws and four losses in Bundesliga – too less for the third most valued side in Bundesliga. Management hopes for better results in Champions League. Last weekend’s victory over Berlin might help with that.
Schalke travelled with the same squad to London as to Berlin. No surprises expected. However manager Jens Keller will most likely change strategy.
“We can not get an early goal to open up again. We want to keep it tight and concentrate on defensive,” Schalke’s manager revealed on Tuesday evening.
Keller’s side joined the chorus. Former Tottenham Hotspur player Kevin-Prince Boateng: “We will wait for Chelsea. We will try to counterattack and wait for our opportunities.” Boateng added: “Especially at home a very, very good team – one of the best sides of the world.”
It will be interesting to see where the Ghanaian international will play. In recent games he served as a winger, as a attacking midfielder, and as a forward. The number 10 is his favourite position on the field, but young gun Max Meyer, whose market value jumped from £0.87m to £3.5m in the last 5 months, is too good there, so Boateng will most likely have to accept the right side.
Injury update aside from long-time injured players: Adam Szalai will be on the pitch. Leon Goretzka is still sidelined.
Schalke’s predicted line-up for tonight: Hildebrand / Fuchs, Matip, Höwedes, Uchida / Aogo, Neustädter / Draxler, Meyer, Boateng / Szalai
Quick side note: Why is Chelsea’s Petr Cech playing with Schalke? No that's just Szalai covering his ear injury.
