The England international found himself back in the team after David Luiz was dropped after the disastrous loss away to Newcastle on Saturday.
The 27-year-old was the epitome of world class defending in the Champions League match against Schalke, with moments of towering strength, blistering pace and composure on the ball. He hasn't found it so easy this season after being widely being seen as 'cover' for the favoured pair of John Terry and David Luiz, with this start he really had a chance to impress the management and fans, which he took with both hands.
A shaky start saw Chelsea put under some early pressure, which Cahill managed to diffuse on several occasions. Once Chelsea got into the game he grew stronger and much more confident in possession and didn't look like he ever had his back against the wall.
John Terry also deserves a lot of credit in the defensive performance, who showed his experience and leadership to ensure the two Englishman worked in unison for the whole night and were the main cause of frustration for the German side.
After his performance, fans took to Twitter to shower the defender in praise and make known of their appreciation of his wonderful performance. Here are some of our favourites on the big man.
Gary Cahill (once again) didn't put a foot wrong tonight. Absolutely no reason why he shouldn't start every game, for us and for England.— Patrick Rourke (@cfcmatchshirts) November 6, 2013
Surprise surprise... Luiz is dropped for Gary Cahill and Chelsea keep another clean sheet. I'm not a big fan of the Brazilian at all.— Spank The Bookies (@SpankTheBookies) November 6, 2013
John Terry & Gary Cahill are clearly our best centre-back pairing. Solid as a rock & 100% commitment #CFC— David Patterson (@DPatz13) November 6, 2013
Take a bow Gary Cahill, you deserve it.
